Visa and travel information for India

  Visas

You will need a valid Tourist visa to enter India. To obtain this you will need to contact your local Indian High Commission, fill in the application form, which is usually available to download online, and take it to them or send it in along with the required fee. This can take up to 10 business days (i.e. two weeks) and your visa is activated from the day you get it rather than upon entry into the country. When stating your purpose on your visa form it is best to say Tourism rather than Yoga.

On your visa application you will be asked to give 1 reference in India of where you are staying, you can use the following:

  1. Mr. Gurudhyan, Ropa village, P.O. Box Bhuntar, Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh, 175125

  Arrival, Departures & Transfers

You are expected to arrive on Saturday the 26th of October in Kullu Valley, and check out and depart on Saturday the 2nd of November to the 'Kulu' airport from where you can take your flight to Delhi and then your connecting flight to London or elsewhere.

If you are travelling from London we suggest that you buy your ticket via the Ebookers and Kingfisher Airlines websites:

www.ebookers.com

www.flykingfisher.com

You can buy a ticket from London to Delhi or to 'Kulu' (if you are using Kingfisher Airlines all the way from London to Kulu), which will include one transfer in Delhi, so you will have to get to the domestic airport from the international Indira Gandhi Airport, which should be easy as both airports are next to each other.

We recommend the following Kingfisher flights:

From the domestic airport in Delhi (located next to the international one) board a Kingfisher flight to Kullu Valley (please choose 'Kulu' when booking your ticket) departing on the 26th of October at 6:50 and arriving at 08.05 am at Bhuntar airport (Kullu Valley).

If you are on this flight you will be received by one of our staff (with a board reading “Yoga Retreat Ropa”) and taken to our retreat site in Kullu Valley.

If you are not arriving on that flight, we will not be able to receive you. In that case you can take a taxi to our site. Please, let us know well in advance (4 weeks before the trip) in case you are unable to get on the recommended flight, so we can provide you with directions.

The recommended flight for your return would be a Kingfisher flight from Kulu, on the 2nd of November departing at 08:40 and arriving in Delhi at 10:00 am.

We recommend the following hotels for your extra night in Delhi (close to the airport):

  Travel Insurance

As with any holiday travel insurance is always recommended and please make sure that you have an international medical insurance in case of an emergency. We will not be able to take any responsibility or cover any costs for medical treatment.

  What to bring

Most of these items can be purchased locally in Kullu and for cheaper than in the West, but you may want to have them with you if you don't want to spend your first couple of days shopping.

  • Yoga mat: We do have loan mats that you can use, however it is advised that you bring your own.
  • Warm yoga clothes: In April and May it is hot once the sun comes up and you can spend all day outdoors in short sleeves, but the mornings can be chilly during practice so its best to have something warm
  • Money: It is best to exchange cash to rupees, the Indian currency, at the airport, and  there are also some ATMs within a 15 minute taxi ride from Ropa. You would want to have some funds on your arrival, which you can purchase at your airport of departure, however rupees are not to be taken out of India on your return. For the up to date exchange rate see www.xe.com
  • Electrical adaptors: Kullu operates on 220V, the same 2 prong plugs as Europe, which are different from the UK ones, so you may want to bring an electrical converter plug.
  • Towel: We provide room towels at the retreat site but ask that you do not take them outdoors.
  • Torch / flashlight: Power outages are frequent in India and part of the charm but you might want some help seeing in the dark.
  • Earplugs: If you are a sensitive sleeper, you may want to bring them along, even if it is just the snoring of your room mate, that may make its way to your ears.
  • Mosquito repellent: Although an excellent version called Odomos is available widely.
  • Sunscreen: You will need to take care against the strong sun, especially when arriving from winter.
  • Clothing: please be sensitive to the local culture and dress modestly. Always cover your legs (long trousers, no skirts), your belly and wear short- or long-sleeved upper body clothing. You may want to pick up some of the beautiful Indian clothing called Salwar Kamiz, consisting of pants and a dress in the local shops or bring them with you from London (they can be bought in Indian stores across the city).
